Summer Programs

The Armory's summer program incorporates a deliberate practice approach in aspects of core hockey fundamental techniques while still prioritizing the use of small area and full-ice competitive games for continued development of decision-making skills, Hockey IQ, creativity, and most importantly, player enjoyment. 

Featuring a new format this summer, our 10 week on-ice program will follow a blocked progression outlined below. 

BLOCK 1: SKATING TECHNIQUE & INDIVIDUAL FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

June 17 - July 1 (No sessions on July 3rd)

5 Sessions | 7.5 Hours of On-Ice Training
Areas of focus include:

• Stride Formation, Technique & Efficiency
• Edgework & Transitions
• Puck handling/control, deceptive puck handling, and under-handling techniques.
• Passing (technique, on-the-move, one-touch, saucer passes, etc)
• Shooting (different types, in-stride, off-the-pass, changing angles)

BLOCK 2: INDIVIDUAL IN-GAME SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

July 8 - July 31 (No sessions the week of July 14th)

6 Sessions | 9 Hours of On-Ice Training
Areas of focus include:

• Dynamic skating (skating skills within context of game situations/environments)
• Puck protection & invading space
• Stick skills/habits
• Gap control
• Offensive attack (1v1 scenarios)
• Angling & Body Contact
• Net front screens/defelections
• Blocking shots
• Breakaways/Shootouts

BLOCK 3: TEAM-BASED COMPETITIVE GAME-PLAY & DEVELOPMENT OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, DECISION-MAKING & HOCKEY IQ

August 4 - August 28

8 Sessions | 12 Hours of On-Ice Training
Areas of focus include:

• Team-based Small Area Games
• Puck possession
• 4 roles of hockey
• Zone entry concepts
• Backchecking concepts
• Forechecking concepts
• Offense/Defense Transitions

All goalies receive personalized training and coaching from Armory Goalie Coach, Jim Gornick.
